5 Shows on Apple TV that you NEED to watch!

Apple TV+ is a dark horse in the streaming television landscape. A lot of people are unfamiliar with their game, but don’t worry, I will tell you what’s up!

Friends and Neighbours

I watched this a couple of months ago after Bisola (@bisolaotun) suggested it, and wow. What a show.

“When a financial titan suddenly finds himself divorced and jobless, he starts robbing his wealthy neighbours to stay afloat. Stealing from his own social circle strangely exhilarates him -- but he gradually gets tangled in a deadly web”.

When I saw the show description, I actually laughed out loud because what do you actually mean? But it’s such a good show! We follow Coop and his internal monologue, and see the crazy choices he makes. We see the chaos and whether his decisions pay off or not. We see what really happens behind the scenes of his friends' and neighbours' lives. The secrets, infidelity, and issues they’d rather not reveal. It's very messy and realistic, even though the plot description sounds ridiculous - it shows how 1 decision can lead to so much more. It feels quite realistic in that sense.

I’ll be honest readers, I don’t know what shows I could compare it to. It’s in its own lane.

Blackbird

“Jimmy Keene is 7 months into a 10-year prison sentence when he gets an incredible offer: if he can get a confession from suspected serial killer Larry Hall, then he will be completely freed from prison.”
This show is based on a true story.

There was no performance that fell short or was unconvincing; everyone did really well. Taron Egerton (from Kingsman) played the main character (Jimmy Keene), and he did an amazing job. It’s such a huge pet peeve of mine when British or Australian actors can’t consistently do an American accent when playing American characters, but Taron did really well - he didn’t crack once.

The depth and range of emotion he conveys is very impressive; it’s such a convincing performance. You see an alpha male (for lack of a better phrase) show such vulnerability as he fights for his freedom, trying to elicit a confession from someone he describes as a monster. You can clearly see the way his character develops throughout the show. The parallels between when he appeared in court in the first episode and when he appeared in court in the final episode is amazing. The writers did a great job; they took us on a journey.

There wasn’t a big mystery to solve in this show. It was literally a waiting game to see if Jimmy could get Larry to tell him where the bodies were, so he could get out of prison before his dad died.

If you like any true crime shows/documentaries, then you will love this.

Slow Horses

A British crime thriller based on a set of novels called Slough House. In Slow Horses, Slough House is basically where all the rejects from the MI5 go who have messed up but haven’t been sacked. It’s supposed to just be an office where the employees do boring admin tasks instead of exciting spy stuff. It’s pretty much a punishment for messing up at some point in your career. However, the rejects of the MI5 still somehow find themselves in and amongst the action and may prove as vital members of the service.

The show is really unpredictable, but still has plot lines that are easy to follow. It’s a good watch and very gripping. The show’s creator seems to be fine with killing any character to keep the audience on their toes. The acting performances are great, and there are great comedic elements.

If you enjoyed Killing Eve and The Bodyguard, you would like this!

Silo

In the future, thousands of people live underground in massive silos. After a sheriff breaks the most important rule, and residents of one of the silos start to die mysteriously, an engineer starts to uncover some truths about the state of their supposed safe haven. This show is brilliant because the mystery keeps building and developing. Every answer we get leads to more questions, which prevents it from being predictable.

The rules of the Silo are explained quickly, which allows the world building to occur almost instantly. As you watch, the theories will develop, and you’ll probably start searching for other Silo-watchers so you can discuss what you think is going on. The mystery and conspiracies, and constant feel of ‘what's going to happen next’, is very gripping and keeps you hooked.

If you like shows such as Snowpiercer, The 100 and Fallout, you will love Silo.

Ted Lasso

This is such a great, heartwarming show about an American coach who moves to England to manage a football team he knows nothing about. It’s a really easy watch with a great balance of comedy and emotional moments. We become so attached to the characters, from the managers of the team to the football players to even some of the fans. It’s really wholesome, and I wish more people knew about it!

There’s not much more to say without spoilers, but if you need to watch a feel-good show about an underdog that is actually funny and relevant, then give it a go.

If you love Scrubs and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, then you’ll love Ted Lasso.
